's decision to sell to in the summer of 2023 may not have been popular at the time, but the club have been more than vindicated ever since.
The 26-year-old, a product of the London club’s academy, made just shy of 200 senior appearances across all competitions, scoring 33 goals in that time. Two summers ago, with Mount approaching the final year of his contract, Chelsea opted to sell him to a rival for £55 million.
A report from at the time claimed made several contract offers during Mount’s final season at , but negotiations ultimately proved fruitless. He instead joined United on a deal running until the end of the 2027/28 season.

However, Mount’s time at Old Trafford has been anything but smooth so far. In his first season, he battled a long-term calf injury and managed just 14 appearances - only five of which were starts.
The current campaign hasn’t fared much better, with the midfielder spending most of it on the sidelines due to a hamstring injury. He has made just 11 league appearances so far, starting only four, the last of which came back in December.
Injuries aside, a positional shift and a managerial change midway through this season have also contributed to United’s inability to get the best out of Mount. And with the transfer window approaching, talk has already begun about the club seeking reinforcements in his position.
According to the , a playmaker - along with a goalkeeper and striker - is a priority for United this summer. That puts a question mark over the long-term futures of Mount, Andre Onana, and Rasmus Hojlund.
There’s no indication United are actively looking to sell Mount, but if reports are to be believed, upgrading his position is firmly on the agenda. It’s still early days in tenure, so there’s time for a working relationship to develop, but Mount will need to put his injury troubles behind him if he’s to have any hope of reigniting his career at Old Trafford.
From perspective, what was initially seen as an unpopular decision has turned out to be entirely in their favour. They pocketed £55 million from the deal and have since reinvested in other areas of the squad.
