NEET UG: Good news for students aspiring to pursue a career in the medical sector in India. In line with Prime Minister Narendra Modi's promise on Independence Day 2024, the National Medical Commission (NMC) has taken a major step forward in the field of medical education in the country. The NMC has approved 10,650 new MBBS seats. This will benefit candidates seeking admission this year as well as those in next year's admission process.
The government aims to create 75,000 new medical seats in the next five years. Let's find out the total number of seats now.
41 New Medical Colleges Added
NMC Chief Dr. Abhijat Sheth stated that with the approval of 41 new medical colleges, the total number of medical institutions in the country has increased to 816. A total of 10,650 new MBBS seats have been approved out of 170 applications for the expansion of undergraduate (UG) seats. These include applications from 41 government and 129 private institutions. With this, the total number of MBBS seats will reach 137,600 for the 2024-25 session. This includes seats at Institutes of National Importance (INIs).
PG seats will also increase by 5,000.
A large number of applications have also been received for postgraduate (PG) courses. The NMC has received over 3,500 new and renewal applications. The Commission expects to add approximately 5,000 new PG seats, bringing the total number of PG seats to 67,000. This will result in an expansion of approximately 15,000 seats this year, including UG and PG seats.
The NMC has clarified that the approval and consultation process will be completed on time. Furthermore, the application portal for 2025-26 will open in early November.
Medical research will also receive a boost.
Dr. Sheth also stated that this time, all appeals against Medical Assessment and Rating Board (MARB) decisions were resolved without any court intervention. Furthermore, the NMC is now working toward incorporating clinical research into the medical curriculum. A collaboration with the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) is being planned for this purpose.
This initiative will not only improve the quality of medical education but also strengthen healthcare services. It will help meet the growing demand for doctors in the country and give a new direction to the health sector.
