Air India Chief Commercial Officer Nipun Agarwal has been appointed as the new Chairman of Air India Express, reported PTI citing a communication sent by Air India CEO Campbell Wilson to employees on Tuesday.

Aggarwal serves as the Chief Commercial Officer and Transformation Officer at Air India, a role he has held since January 2022. He joined the airline shortly after playing a pivotal role in Tata Sons’ acquisition of Air India, and has since been a key architect in reshaping the airline’s business strategy and driving its commercial turnaround.

At Air India, Aggarwal oversees a broad portfolio of strategic and operational functions, including aircraft acquisition and financing, strategic procurement, network planning, product development, sales and marketing, revenue management, and the Flying Returns loyalty programme.

Under his leadership, Air India has inked record-breaking aircraft and engine purchase agreements with major OEMs, setting the stage for one of the largest fleet overhauls in global aviation history, the Tata-owned airline has noted. His focus on cost efficiency and commercial discipline has also led to the negotiation of several high-value contracts that aim to boost the airline’s long-term financial performance.

Prior to joining Air India, he was Senior Vice President at Tata Sons, where he played a key role in revitalizing multiple group companies. His earlier roles include leadership stints at Bank of America Merrill Lynch, Standard Chartered Bank, and BP PLC.

In addition to his responsibilities at AI, Aggarwal holds significant leadership roles within the Tata aviation ecosystem. He is currently the Chairman of Air India SATS Airport Services and was recently named Chairman of Air India Express. He also serves on the boards of AIX Connect and Talace Private Limited.

Moreover, Aggarwal holds a Post Graduate Diploma in Management from the Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Calcutta and a Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering from Delhi College of Engineering.
