It's been a two-year wait since last graced Netflix, so subscribers are overjoyed to see the return of Charlie Brooker's darkly twisted anthology drama.

All six episodes dropped on the streaming platform on Thursday, April 10, with keen fans immediately diving into its premiere episode, Common People.

Featuring The IT Crowd's Chris O'Dowd, The Office star Rashida Jones and Black-ish's Tracee Ellis Rose, Common People tells the tale of married couple Mike and Amanda.

Despite their struggles to conceive a child, Mike (portrayed by Chris O'Dowd) and Amanda (Rashida Jones) enjoy a content life together until it's revealed that she has a brain tumour that leaves her in a coma.

It seems all hope is lost for her until Mike meets Gaynor (Tracee Ellis Rose), a representative from new tech start-up Rivermind.

Gaynor informs Mike that Rivermind can construct a back-up of the infected part of Amanda's brain, remove the tumour and replace it with the synthetic piece of brain which is connected to Rivermind's towers.

However, while he manages to get his wife back, Mike didn't anticipate the amount of trouble this agreement would bring.

To sustain Amanda's life, the couple must pay a monthly subscription to access a service and need to stay in range of its towers.

They're limited to staying within the county under their "basic" package, after which Rivermind begins to air adverts through Amanda without her knowledge.

This becomes problematic at her school when she unwittingly pitches products to students and advises a child from a troubled home to check out a family Christian website.

To stop the ads and have the freedom to travel, they must upgrade to a pricier Rivermind package that costs them hundreds more dollars every month.

Meanwhile, Mike, struggling financially, covertly joins the "Dum Dummies" website where he earns money performing dreadful tasks such as drinking his urine or trapping his tongue in a mousetrap.

After removing his identity-concealing mask for a large sum, Mike's co-workers discover his activities and ridicule him, leading to an altercation that results in a serious injury from heavy machinery, resulting in Mike's termination.

Meanwhile, Amanda is increasingly lethargic; Gaynor reveals that the upgrade extract more power from the towers, consequently draining her energy while she sleeps.

In an extravagant twist, Mike and Amanda stumble upon a premium package they can't afford, but Mike snags a "booster" giving his wife a taste of liberty over a weekend, complete with an app to dial up her joy to the heights of ecstasy at a mere tap.

The tale leaps a year ahead, finding Mike trading their baby's cot to a duo keen on torching it for a music clip.

As they part, Mike's grin reveals a gap where a tooth once was, insinuating that he yanked it out for a Dum Dummies dare.

Back home, Mike unveils another booster to Amanda, granting her waves of profound peace.

She looks at him saying it's time; then lies on the bed, awaiting the countdown on Mike's mobile.

With love declared between them, the count hits zero and an ad floods through Amanda as they revert to the no-frills plan.

At this instant, Mike silences her breath with a pillow, shielding her from the act by timing it with the advert.

Aching with grief, Mike enters the next room, box cutter in hand and Dum Dummies echoing from the computer, alluding to his final settlement with Rivermind.
