The UK government has expanded its Electric Car Grant (ECG) to include 13 additional electric vehicle (EV) models from a number of major manufacturers.
This latest update follows the previous announcement that six electric Citroën models had already qualified for the discount. The grant provides a reduction of up to £3,750 on selected EVs costing £37,000 or less, with the price cuts based on emissions produced during their manufacture and assembly.
None of the newly included vehicles qualify for the highest discount level of £3,750, with all receiving the lower amount of £1,500. In other news, mindless yobs damage 41 cars in vandalism rampage through sleepy market town.

The ECG aims to make EV ownership more affordable and accessible, supporting the UK's electric revolution and the transition to greener, cleaner energy. The grant is part of the government's £650 million funding initiative to boost EV uptake, drive industry growth and invest in public charging infrastructure.
The scheme automatically applies the discount to the selected models, so buyers don't even need to register to benefit from it. The new crop of vehicles includes popular models, many of which were already among the most affordable EVs on the market.
Per AutoCar, here's the list of eligible models and their current prices (including the six Citroën models that had already qualified for the discount):

Managing director of Nissan GB, James Taylor, praised the grant as "a clear signal to both customers and manufacturers that they are prioritising the uptake of EV in the UK, and on providing affordable options to consumers". He also revealed that the manufacturer has a trio new EVs coming out soon, including the electric Juke and Qashqai, as well as an updated Leaf model, all of which are expected to qualify for the maximum £3,750 grant due to their locally-sourced batteries.
While the government has not confirmed when additional EVs might be added next, many other electric models priced below £37,000 have already seen manufacturer-driven discounts. The scheme rewards vehicles produced under strict emission criteria, effectively excluding a great many Asian-built EVs that do not meet the environmental targets required for the grant.
Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander highlighted the grant's role in making EV ownership "cheaper, easier and a reality for thousands more people across the UK." She also reaffirmed the government's commitment to investing in the expansion of friendly transport options and infrastructure.
The expanded ECG list and ongoing investments reflect the UK's efforts to accelerate the shift to electric, while reducing emissions and supporting green manufacturing and innovation in the UK.
