That all changed on Sunday as he finally put on the iconic Green Jacket after beating Britain's Justin Rose in a dramatic play-off. The Northern Irishman headed to the first tee on the final day with a two-shot lead over Bryson DeChambeau, but that was erased after just one hole, with McIlroy only able to record a double bogey.

He then managed to establish a four-shot lead before inexplicably dropping into the water on the 13th. That opened the door for Rose who set the clubhouse lead with a brilliant birdie on the final hole.

McIlroy had the chance to win the title on the same hole, but slid his par putt agonisingly wide to open up the potential of yet more heartbreak. However, a perfect three shots meant he birdied the first play-off hole with Rose only able to record a par.
