As Indian cricket icons Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma prepare for the upcoming ODI series against Australia, home captain Pat Cummins has expressed both admiration and regret. He acknowledged the greatness of the two Indian superstars but admitted disappointment at not being able to take part in the much-anticipated series himself.
Speaking to local media ahead of the first ODI in Perth on Sunday, Cummins said the series is special because Australian fans might be watching Virat and Rohit play on their soil for the last time. “These two have been part of every Indian team for nearly 15 years. For our fans, this could be the final opportunity to see them in action here,” Cummins remarked, adding that their consistency and dominance make them standout figures in world cricket.
Why Cummins Called It a ShameCummins confessed that missing matches against India always feels unfortunate. “It’s a shame to miss the ODI and T20 series against India. I think there’s going to be an incredible crowd and so much buzz in Australia,” he said. “Whenever you have to sit out, it’s tough. But missing a big series like this one is especially disappointing.”
The Australian captain’s absence could prove significant since India’s top order — particularly Kohli and Rohit — has a strong record on Australian pitches. Both batting legends boast ODI averages above fifty in Australia, posing a serious challenge to the home side.
Cummins’ Advice to Stand-In Captain Mitchell MarshWith Cummins sidelined, Mitchell Marsh will lead Australia in the three-match ODI series. Cummins has urged Marsh to use the series as an opportunity to build for the future. “Of course, we want to win the series,” Cummins noted, “but it’s equally important to test young players — especially those who weren’t in the ODI World Cup squad. By the 2027 World Cup, we need clarity on which 15 players will represent Australia.”
Despite his absence, Cummins wished his team success and said he would closely follow the series. The stage is set for another classic showdown between India and Australia — and perhaps, one last roaring reception Down Under for Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma.
