International Desk: US President Donald Trump on Monday made a scathing statement on his social media platform Truth Social regarding trade relations with India. Accusing India of imposing the highest import duty (tariff) in the world, Trump claimed that India sells a huge amount of goods to the US, while the US is able to sell very little goods to India. He termed it a "one-sided disaster" that has been going on for decades.
Trump's allegations against India: One-sided trade and high tariffs
"Very few people know that we do very little trade with India, but they trade a lot with us. In other words, India sells a huge amount of goods to us as its largest customer, but we sell very little to them," Trump said in his post. He accused India of imposing high import duties, which have made it difficult for US companies to do business in the Indian market. Trump also claimed that India recently offered to reduce tariffs on US imports, but called it a "step too late".

Trump also targeted India's purchase of oil and military equipment from Russia
.He said that India buys a huge amount of oil and military equipment from Russia, while it buys very little from the US. Trump accused India of indirectly funding Russia for the Ukraine war.
50% tariff impacts India-US trade
The Trump administration has imposed a 50% tariff on Indian imports from August 27, 2025, which includes a 25% baseline tariff and an additional 25% tariff, as a punishment for buying oil from Russia. The move has had a profound impact on India's sectors such as textiles, gems and jewellery and seafood, which are dependent on the US market.
India calls tariffs unfair
India has called the US tariffs "unfair and unjust", saying oil imports from Russia are essential to ensure energy security for 1.4 billion Indians. The Indian foreign ministry made it clear that many Western countries, including the US and the European Union, themselves trade with Russia, yet India is being unnecessarily targeted. India also said it will continue to buy oil from Russia to meet its economic needs.
New turn in India-US relations
Trump's strict tariff policy has strained India-US strategic relations. Earlier both countries considered each other important partners, but this policy has inspired India to strengthen its partnership with countries like Russia and China. Russia has already been India's trusted partner for decades. India has made it clear that it will take every necessary step to protect its national interests.
Impact on global trade and geopolitics
Trump's policy can create new equations in global trade and geopolitics. This tension in India-US trade relations can have long-term effects on both countries. Experts believe that India can now focus more on diversifying its trade and diplomatic strategy.
