It was the bakery that was talked about around the globe when and Meghan Markle announced they had chosen Claire Ptak of Violet Cakes
The couple had chosen the Californian-style bakery to make a lemon and elderflower centre piece, which had a sponge topped with Swiss meringue buttercream and was displayed as four separate cakes on different stands during their wedding reception. The cake chosen was a departure from previous traditional royal wedding cakes.
The cake was reportedly made using 200 Amalfi lemons and 500 organic eggs from Suffolk, and 10 bottles of elderflower syrup came from the late Queen's .
The bakery has captured the attention of cake enthusiasts, and I visited it on a quiet morning simply to see what the fuss was all about. Nestled on a quiet street in Hackney, East London, Violet Cakes is charming.

On the approach to the bakery, I noted the yellow-pastel coloured brick suited the aesthetic of East London, and instantly saw the 'VIOLET' sign painted in green on the side of the building.
I was greeted at the front door by a random bucket of fresh flowers, which instantly reminded me of the Californian hippy vibe Meghan Markle knows, loves and is often mentioned on her .
Side-stepping around the bucket and through the front door, I was welcomed by the inviting aroma of freshly baked sweet goods. The counter showcased an array of delectable treats, from classic cakes to innovative cookies, all crafted with the same attention to detail that I believe went into the royal wedding cake.
Cakes on display were the Californian Sheet Cake, Vanilla Chocolate Cupcake, Strawberry Cupcake, Coconut Macaroon, Halva Tahini Brownie, Sea Salt White Chocolate Matcha Blondie, and Californian Cookie.
The Californian Cookie contained three types of chocolate inside and was sprinkled with rainbow hundreds and thousands, having a child-like element to its design. Feeling peckish, I also ordered a Strawberry Cupcake, as I was eager to find any resemblance to Meghan and Harry's wedding cake.
The server was helpful, kind, and explained the ingredients in both of the desired treats. Cradling my treats in a box, I sat outside in the sunshine on the bright red tables and chairs, watching the world go by as I waited for my cappuccino.
American tourists and friends who passed my table as they entered the bakery had one woman exclaiming, "Here we are! This is the place famous for Harry's wedding cake!" It appears I was not alone in thought, and seven years on from the royal wedding, people are still
Biting into the sweet treat, the cupcake sponge was light but luxurious, and it had the perfect amount of strawberry flavour inside. However, it was coupled with powerfully sweet icing - too sweet for me, but something you would expect from a brightly coloured cupcake.
The cookie also had a fun, youthful design and flavour, and reminded me of something that would have caught my eye as a child while in a coffee shop with my parents.
Royalty meets East London cool, Violet Cakes deserves the attention it still receives following its tempting offering of sweet treats and delicious coffee. It's understated and very East London, very "we don't need to shout about it", which somehow makes it even more smugly royal and a great choice made by The Sussexes.
The large window at the side of the bakery allows for passers-by to see straight into the kitchen and upon leaving, I noted the kitchen team carefully icing a grand-sized cake for a special occasion - possibly another wedding. Whether it rivals Harry and Meghan's grand affair or not, either way, it looked equally as delicious.
