Retro tech that's now useless could make people hundreds, according to a pre-owned price index. Old PlayStation consoles could fetch up to £300, Nokia and Blackberry phones can reach £30, and iPhones are still raking in hundreds, according to data from online marketplace Gumtree.

Even though the graphics on old gaming consoles are outdated, the PlayStation 1 and 2 and Nintendo Wii generated 1,031 responses to listings on Gumtree in the past year. The PlayStation 1, last made in 2006, and PlayStation 2, last made in 2013, are still worth £45 each on average second-hand. When it comes to the PS5, Gumtree advised sellers not to undervalue it, with the consoles selling for £300 on average secondhand, around £180 lower than new models.

People are also willing to pay an average of £30 for a nostalgic Nokia phone, and BlackBerry, which permanently disabled all services that supported its classic operating system in 2022, still sell for an average of £30 on Gumtree for tech keenos.

Nearly new phones can be worth hundreds if they're the right brand. iPhones command an average of £250, with newer models going for more, and Samsung phones sell for £200 on average.

iPhone listings alone have generated over 45,000 responses on Gumtree this year, with the average iPhone getting 1.4 replies for every listing.

Even though answering machines for landlines were phased out in the nineties, they still sell for £35 on average on the marketplace, with over 1,000 people responding to adverts for them in the past year.

Commenting on the Index, Kim Faura, consumer expert at Gumtree said: "We've launched our Pre-Owned Price Index to give buyers and sellers clarity - showing the real value that exists in buying and selling pre-owned.

"It not only highlights the surprising worth of forgotten tech but also shows how re-commerce can help people save money and reduce waste.

"One of the most interesting findings is how much seemingly outdated tech can still sell for. What someone plans to do with an answering machine or a Blackberry phone isn't always obvious, but clearly nostalgia still carries value.

"For those with newer tech, the guide gives clear, practical advice on how much something can realistically be bought or sold for - helping people price fairly and make smarter, more sustainable choices."
