Britons are creating gastronomic dinner disasters as a new report reveals we pair our red and white wines with food that would make connoisseurs quake. The study of 2,004 UK adults by UK wine brand 'The Straw Hat' found rather than sirloin steak with a red or chilled white with a seafood platter, we would rather pair ourvino with unsophisticated food like cheese on toast (20 percent) or chips (17 percent).

Millennials were the most likely to make wine faux pasat an average of just over 5 every four weeks, while Leicester has been crowned the wine crime capital of the UK with an average of 4.5 misdemeanours a month. In total, just 11 percent of Brits said they've drunk wine alongside a steamingPot Noodle or baked beans on toast, while4 percent of us glug it down with ice cream.

Other regular pairings also included Skips, Wotsits, Pringles, Pickled Onion Monster Munch crisps - or Pork Pies, sausage rolls, late night kebabs and cheese strings.

Amy Giaccobi, from The Straw Hat, told the Express: "In the past, wine has been given an unfair rap, with many feeling that the sector is shrouded in mystery and expertise that alludes us.

"In reality, wine can be fun and enjoyable, and it's actually pleasing to see that a lot of Brits are throwing out the 'rules' and pairing wine with cheese on toast, chips and picky bits."

Exploring Brits' eccentric relationship with wine further - the survey revealed some of Britain's other biggest 'wine crimes' with the people of the UK admitting they commit an average of four a month.

As well as the unusual food pairings, choosing a bottle purely on the look of the label was the most common rule-breaker (32 percent), whilst just under a third of Brits (27 percent) confessed to drinking straight out of the bottle.

Another contentious issue surrounds ice cubes. A quarter of us admit to putting themin white wine, a further 16% add them to red and 11 percent add a blockto a glass of Prosecco - one in 10 even confessed to drinking wine through a straw.

Embarrassingly, 18 percent of respondents also said they regularly mispronounce the names of wine grapes and vineyards whilst 17 percent mix wine with lemonade or diet cola, Lady Gaga style.

When it came to how we consume wine most Brits use convectional wine glasses (64 percent) but nearly a quarter of Brits (21 percent) drink out of tumblers, 14 percent use mugs usually reserved for tea or coffee and one in 10 are using plastic or party cups - around one in 20 said they drink wine out of pint glasses.

Amy Giaccobi of The Straw Hat added: "Our great value wines, which are British-made right here in Yorkshire, are designed to be enjoyed alongside whatever you fancy, and we actively encourage drinkers to experiment and find new ways to delight in vino.

"Want to chill your red, add ice to your rosé or create a fruity punch or sangria? Fine by us!"
