COIMBATORE: A 19-year-old youth from Thoothukudi district slipped while climbing the seventh hill to reach the Velliangiri temple around 8.30 pm on Friday and died on the spot.
The deceased was identified as P Puvanesh, from Thalamuthu Nagar at Mappillaiurani in Thoothukudi district.
He came to Coimbatore along with his friends Muthukumar and Hariharasudhan on Friday night.
They started to climb the Velliangiri hills in the morning. They were climbing the seventh hill around 8:30 pm. Puvanesh lost his balance while climbing the hill and slipped into a seven-metre deep gorge. He sustained severe head injuries and became unconscious on the spot.
His friends alerted the forest department frontline staff, who informed the dolly bearers and reached the area within a few hours. The dolly bearers brought him to the plain at midnight, and he was declared dead by the doctors. The body was sent to the Coimbatore Medical College Hospital (CMCH) for postmortem.
Alandurai police registered a case, and further investigation is on.
