3 years late, but STP to tackle waste from new sectors may get a design soon

Gurgaon: A crucial sewage treatment project in Sector 107 — delayed for nearly three years — is finally gaining momentum. The 100 MLD sewage treatment plant (STP), vital for managing wastewater from the developing sectors along Dwarka Expressway, has entered its planning phase.

Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) is now appointing a consultant to prepare a detailed project report (DPR). The project has faced multiple setbacks since its announcement by former CM Manohar Lal Khattar in May 2022.

The consultant will design a comprehensive technical plan incorporating site-specific requirements. "We've invited tenders for a consultant to prepare the DPR, which will include the layout, design, and cost estimates," a senior GMDA official said. The authority expects to take possession of the site soon, following receipt of the land possession letter.

The STP is a critical component of GMDA's infrastructure expansion plan for the newly developed sectors. The region, covering sectors 81 to 115, requires a total treatment capacity of 350 MLD. The approved 100 MLD plant represents the first phase of this larger initiative.

The project initially faced hurdles over land acquisition. GMDA had identified 49.9 acres in Daultabad, valued at Rs 191 crore. The chief minister's intervention in Aug 2023 simplified the process by deciding to either lease the land to GMDA or provide it free of cost.

The delay in the STP's construction has, however, impacted local residents severely. "Untreated sewage in vacant plots creates unbearable conditions, especially during summer," said Vikram Singh, a Sector 84 resident. The stagnant waste has led to mosquito breeding and foul odour, affecting the quality of life in nearby areas.

"The completion of this project is key to addressing the growing sewage management needs of these rapidly developing sectors along Dwarka Expressway," an official said.
