Woman ends life in Auraiya after wedding gets cancelled

Kanpur: A 22-year-old woman took her own life by hanging after her impending marriage was cancelled in Kakrahia under Bela police station limits in Auraiya. Police have started their investigation in the case. Her wedding was originally planned for May 28.

Poonam (22), daughter of Santram from Kakrahia, was discovered hanging from a ceiling hook with a scarf at around 8 am on Saturday. Upon discovering her daughter, Urmila raised an alarm. The family then lowered the body, hoping to find signs of life.

According to Urmila, Poonam was to wed a man from Bahadurpur in Dibiyapur. The engagement ceremony took place on January 27. The marriage ceremony was scheduled for May 28 at a Dibiyapur guest house.

The family said that the groom's family's refusal to proceed with the wedding as the date approached caused significant distress to Poonam. Station officer in-charge, Mulendra Singh Chauhan, said that various aspects of the incident are under investigation.

The exact cause of death will be established after receiving the post-mortem report.

The family has yet to register an official complaint.
