JAMMU: CBI arrested a patwari (revenue official) from Sudh Mahadev-Chenani of Udhampur district in Jammu & Kashmir while he was accepting a bribe from a complainant.
“The agency also conducted searches at his residential premises,” a spokesperson of CBI said here on Sunday.
"CBI registered a case against the accused on a complaint,” he said, adding, “The complainant applied for a fard (a copy of land record) through a designated online portal, but the patwari rejected two of his applications without any valid reason.”
“The complainant said he met the patwari, who demanded a bribe of Rs 50,000 for processing and issuing the fard,” the CBI spokesperson said, adding, “However, after negotiation, the accused agreed to reduce the bribe amount to Rs 40,000.”
“On getting a complaint CBI registered a case and laid a trap on Saturday (April 26). The accused was caught red-handed while accepting the bribe amount of Rs 40,000 from the complainant in the presence of independent witnesses. Subsequently, the accused was arrested and a search was conducted at his residential premises,” the spokesperson said.
CBI produced the accused before the court of special judge, anti-corruption (CBI Cases), Jammu, on Sunday. The court remanded the accused in judicial custody for 14 days.
