NEW DELHI: A 5.7 magnitude earthquake struck Tibet on Monday, according to the National Center for Seismology ( NCS ). The tremor occurred at a depth of 10km, which increases the likelihood of aftershocks.
The NCS posted on X saying, "EQ of M: 5.7, On: 12/05/2025 02:41:24 IST, Lat: 29.02 N, Long: 87.48 E, Depth: 10 Km, Location: Tibet."
No injuries or damage has been reported yet.
Previously on May 8, the region experienced a 3.7 magnitude earthquake.
Surface-level earthquakes pose greater risks than deeper ones because they release more energy near ground level. This results in more intense ground movement and potentially greater structural damage and casualties compared to deeper seismic events.
The Tibetan Plateau experiences frequent seismic activity due to its location.
