A dramatic turn of events unfolded at the Adichunchanagiri Kalyana Mantapa in Hassan on Friday when a bride refused to go through with the wedding just moments before the ‘mangalasutra’ was to be tied, declaring that she did not want the marriage.

The bride, Pallavi, a postgraduate from Bhuvanahalli locality in Hassan, was set to marry Venugopal, a government school teacher from G. Timmanahalli village in Alur taluk. Their wedding had been arranged three months earlier and was scheduled to be held on Friday.

However, as the groom was preparing to tie the mangalsutra, Pallavi suddenly objected, saying she did not wish to marry. According to sources, she had been in a relationship for several years with a man from Banavase village near Gorur in Hassan taluk. On her way to the wedding venue, she reportedly received a phone call from her lover, prompting her to declare she would marry him instead.

Following the disruption, Pallavi’s family summoned her lover Raghu to the venue. Later that evening, the couple was married at the Ganapathi Temple located within the Adichunchanagiri Mutt premises itself.

Disappointed by the sudden cancellation, the groom Venugopal and his family were reportedly consoled by Pallavi’s relatives. In the presence of police officers, a sum of ₹1.75 lakh was paid to Venugopal’s family as reimbursement for wedding expenses.

The unusual incident has drawn widespread attention in the region, with many commenting on the importance of personal choice in marriage decisions.
